Challenger Tour Weekly Recap: Huesler Dominates in Mexico, Svrcina & Gaubas Lift Trophies

The ATP Challenger Tour delivered another action-packed week, with Marc-Andrea Huesler extending his dominance in Mexico, Dalibor Svrcina continuing his breakout season, and Vilius Gaubas rediscovering his form in Menorca. Meanwhile, Tomas Barrios Vera and Dmitry Popko showcased their resilience in Campinas and Morelos, respectively. Let’s break down the key highlights from last week’s tournaments.

Barletta: Svrcina’s Stellar Season Continues

Czech talent Dalibor Svrcina has been one of the standout players on the Challenger Tour this season, and his victory in Barletta further solidified his rise. Originally slated for Bucharest ATP 250 qualifying, Svrcina switched to Barletta after a strong run in Naples—and it paid off.

After cruising through early rounds (including a walkover against Lilian Marmousez), he faced a tough test against top seed Valentin Royer in the semifinals. Svrcina saved a set point in the opener before sealing a 7-5, 6-3 win.

In the final, he met Vitaliy Sachko, who had clawed through qualifying and survived a match point against 17-year-old Jacopo Vasami. Sachko’s aggressive return game initially troubled Svrcina, but the Czech adjusted brilliantly, using his defensive skills and variety to neutralize the threat. A 7-5, 6-3 victory secured Svrcina’s fourth Challenger title, propelling him into the ATP Race Top 60. Both finalists will next compete in Monza, with Sachko entering via special exempt.

Campinas: Barrios Vera Outlasts Guillen Meza

Tomas Barrios Vera has been a consistent force on the South American clay-court circuit, and his run in Campinas culminated in a fifth Challenger title. The Chilean avenged previous losses to Joao Lucas Reis da Silva before overcoming Juan Pablo Varillas in a hard-fought semifinal (improving their H2H to 7-2).

In the final, he faced Alvaro Guillen Meza, who was desperate for points to secure Grand Slam qualifying spots. The quicker conditions favored Barrios Vera, whose flat groundstrokes and relentless returning kept Guillen Meza under pressure. Despite a late surge from the Ecuadorian, Barrios Vera closed out a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Both players will now shift focus to the U.S. green clay swing, with Barrios Vera eyeing a return to the ATP Top 100.

Menorca: Gaubas Ends Slump with Commanding Win

Lithuania’s Vilius Gaubas entered Menorca with a dismal 3-9 season record, but he turned his fortunes around in spectacular fashion. After surviving a tense battle against Sebastian Ofner (saving set points from 3-5 down), he bulldozed through the draw without dropping a set.

In the final, he faced Pol Martin Tiffon, who was battling a back injury. Gaubas stormed through the first set 6-0 before Tiffon briefly rallied in the second. However, the Lithuanian’s aggressive baseline play proved too much, sealing a 6-0, 6-4 win for his second Challenger title.

Tiffon’s runner-up finish was bittersweet—it secured his Roland Garros qualifying debut, a milestone in his career. Both players will now feature in Madrid, with Tiffon receiving a special exempt.

Morelos: Huesler’s Love Affair with Mexico Continues

Switzerland’s Marc-Andrea Huesler has a special connection with Mexico, and his Morelos triumph marked his fourth Challenger title in the country (all on different surfaces). After shaking off rust in Morelia, he found his rhythm, defeating rising star Rafael Jodar in the semifinals.

The final pitted him against Dmitry Popko, who was coming off a title in Morelia. Fatigue seemed to affect Popko, but he still pushed Huesler to a decider. In a tense third set, Huesler’s net-rushing tactics paid off, clinching a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory.

Huesler will next compete in Mexico City, while Popko heads to the Sarasota Challenger on green clay.
