Toss and Other Factors for India and New Zealand to Consider Ahead of the Final

India’s recent streak of losing 14 consecutive tosses in ODIs has become a talking point ahead of the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand. This unprecedented run began with the World Cup final in Ahmedabad on November 19, 2023. Despite this, India have secured nine wins out of 14 matches, with four losses and one tie (against Sri Lanka).

At the Dubai International Cricket Stadium (DICS), India have lost all four tosses but won every game, showcasing their ability to overcome the toss factor. Historically, the DICS has favored teams batting second, as seen in the 2021 T20 World Cup and IPL matches held there. However, this tournament has bucked the trend, with dew playing a minimal role due to cooler nighttime temperatures.

Former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson noted, “I expected more dew, but fortunately, it hasn’t been a factor. The toss isn’t decisive, which is great for the final. Indian fans need not worry about Rohit Sharma’s toss record.”

While Rohit may not be concerned about the toss, winning it could still provide a slight advantage. Hesson highlighted Varun Chakaravarthy’s effectiveness under lights, suggesting New Zealand might prefer to bat first to counter his threat.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson acknowledged the different conditions at DICS compared to Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, where he scored a century in the semifinal against South Africa. He emphasized the importance of learning from their previous match against India and preparing for the final.

Williamson dismissed the notion that India’s familiarity with Dubai gives them an edge, stating, “It is what it is. Our focus is on the final, and we’re excited for the challenge.
