Riyan Parag will captain Rajasthan Royals (RR) for the first three matches of IPL 2025. This decision comes as regular skipper Sanju Samson continues his recovery from a finger injury. While Samson will play as a pure batter, Parag will take on the leadership role temporarily.
The announcement was made during an informal team chat, with Samson addressing the squad. “I’m not fully fit for the next three games,” Samson said. “There are many leaders in this team, and Riyan Parag will take charge for now. I urge everyone to support him.”
Samson sustained a finger injury during the T20I series against England and underwent surgery. Although he has made significant progress in his recovery, he is yet to regain full fitness for wicketkeeping duties. As a result, he has been partially cleared to bat but will not keep wickets initially.
Parag, known for his aggressive batting, will step up as captain for the first three games. Samson, meanwhile, will represent RR at the IPL captains’ meeting in Mumbai. After the third match, Samson will undergo another fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to assess his readiness for wicketkeeping.
This temporary change in leadership highlights RR’s adaptability as they aim for a strong start to the season. Fans will be eager to see how Parag handles the added responsibility and whether Samson can make a full recovery soon.
